Top Three Shrink Wrap Accessories to Streamline Your Shrink Wrap Job

1. Extensions for Heat Guns: 2ft., 4ft., & 6ft. Options

Heat gun extensions are necessary if you are doing any project that is larger than your arm span. If it is not physically possible to reach the entire project on a diagonal angle past the length of the user’s arm, then a heat gun extension will be needed.

When wrapping a boat it will usually have a peak in the middle of the boat. Typically, it is anywhere from 4-10ft away from your reach depending on the size of the boat. Extensions can be used to bridge that gap. This shrink wrap accessory is very versatile and should always be considered prior to starting a shrink wrap project.

Selecting the right length: For a small boat that gets wrapped every year, the 2ft or 4ft extensions would work. The 6ft extension is best used on larger boats, industrial equipment, or construction equipment. The 6ft extension can cover approximately a 20ft area in an arch pattern assuming the user can reach approximately 7ft in each direction. The 6ft extension also allows the user to shrink the wrap nearly 8 ft away from the heat tool!

Mr. Shrinkwrap Advisor Pro Tip: If you are debating between a 4ft extension and the 6ft, we recommend purchasing the 6ft. It’s always better to have more reach than to be caught short.

2. Shrink Wrap Stands

Shrink wrap stands, or dispensing racks, while not as exciting as a brand new heat gun or fancy extension, are very useful. Without a proper way to dispense shrink wrap as needed during a project, the user is left to resort to his/her own devices. Attempting to unroll and lay the shrink wrap out on the lawn or driveway, pulling it unevenly, or wrinkling the wrap could result in a poor finished product.

While considered an “accessory”, shrink wrap stands are truly a necessity. Shrink wrap stands make your shrink wrapping process efficient and effective, otherwise, the user will have to use a makeshift method to unroll the wrap.

Mr. Shrinkwrap Advisors recommend the following options:

3. Shrink Wrap Tape

Shrink wrap tape is primarily used for reinforcing shrink wrap seams or fusions, patching small holes in the shrink wrap, holding vents in place more securely, and attaching zipper-access doors when your project is nearly complete.

(we recommend at least 2" but 4" can help if holes happen)

  • Heat shrink tape - Also known as shrink film tape, it is used only on shrink wrap itself and should not touch the surface of a boat or other asset. This tape is a conformable, tough, and waterproof tape with a permanently tacky adhesive which bonds best to clean, dry surfaces through a wide range of temperatures.
  • UV Preservation tape - Also known as “Hull Tape,” this thicker tape, has a UV enhanced adhesive formula that allows it to withstand long term sunlight exposure. No film/residue leftover which can happen with other tape products. Used by many car auction businesses. Great to use on boats because this tape can touch the surface of boats without damaging or leaving residue. Recommended to have 1 roll of 2” tape and 1 roll of 4” tape for most projects.
  • Anti-chafe tape: A surface protection film that is used over the hull of boats or other areas where there is a concern for scratches. Sometimes used around the strap area, especially when transportation will be occurring. Designed to not leave residue while providing a UV protective surface between the shrink wrap and the covered object.
  • Reinforced shrink wrap tape - Used with reinforced shrink wrap. Not used for boats, primarily used for large industrial construction projects. This tape has been reinforced which adds increased tear resistance while not negatively affecting ease of installation.

Shrink wrap tape comes in three colors: white, blue, and clear. Typically tape color is the same as the shrink wrap color for uniformity and usage.

  • White - Most commonly used. Holds up in most climates well and offers minimal heat transference.
  • Clear - Primarily used to cover greenhouses. Also used for brokerage boats & liveaboards spending their winters ‘on the hard’. Clear shrink wrap is more likely to build up moisture under the cover and should be ventilated properly.
  • Blue - Ideal if your boat is being stored in an extreme northern climate. The blue color absorbs heat and allows snow and ice to slide off the boat. Not recommended for long-term storage or in spring-like conditions.
