Top Three Shrink Wrap Accessories to Streamline Your Shrink Wrap Job

By 4 months ago 162 Views No comments

1. Extensions for Heat Guns: 2ft., 4ft., & 6ft. Options

Heat gun extensions are necessary if you are doing any project that is larger than your arm span. If it is not physically possible to reach the entire project on a diagonal angle past the length of the user’s arm, then a heat gun extension will be needed.

When wrapping a boat it will usually have a peak in the middle of the boat. Typically, it is anywhere from 4-10ft away from your reach depending on the size of the boat. Extensions can be used to bridge that gap. This shrink wrap accessory is very versatile and should always be considered prior to starting a shrink wrap project.

Selecting the right length: For a small boat that gets wrapped every year, the 2ft or 4ft extensions would work. The 6ft extension is best used on larger boats, industrial equipment, or construction equipment. The 6ft extension can cover approximately a 20ft area in an arch pattern assuming the user can reach approximately 7ft in each direction. The 6ft extension also allows the user to shrink the wrap nearly 8 ft away from the heat tool!

Mr. Shrinkwrap Advisor Pro Tip: If you are debating between a 4ft extension and the 6ft, we recommend purchasing the 6ft. It’s always better to have more reach than to be caught short.

Not ready to purchase a heat gun extension? Pair your Shrinkfast 998 rental with a 6ft extension. Reach to new heights to shrink wrap in places otherwise unreachable with a custom extension for the Shrinkfast 998. The heat gun extension handle is ideal for industrial and marine shrink wrap applications.

2. Shrink Wrap Stands

Shrink wrap stands, or dispensing racks, while not as exciting as a brand new heat gun or fancy extension, are very useful. Without a proper way to dispense shrink wrap as needed during a project, the user is left to resort to his/her own devices. Attempting to unroll and lay the shrink wrap out on the lawn or driveway, pulling it unevenly, or wrinkling the wrap could result in a poor finished product.

While considered an “accessory”, shrink wrap stands are truly a necessity. Shrink wrap stands make your shrink wrapping process efficient and effective, otherwise, the user will have to use a makeshift method to unroll the wrap.

Mr. Shrinkwrap Advisors recommend the following options:

This lightweight, yet strong (330 lb load capacity) stand is versatile, waterproof, rustproof, reliable, rugged, and fast. It comes apart allowing for easy storage in any tool kit. Easily comes apart to fit in any tool kit or storage area. *lightest rack on wheels* Designed like a normal hand truck or dolly, but for shrink wrap!

This sturdy welded stand in mild steel is versatile, reliable, and comes as a pair.

This lightweight and strong (330 lb load capacity) stand is versatile, waterproof, rustproof, reliable, rugged, and fast that interlocks for compact storage.

*note: no poles are included with shrink wrap stands.

3. Shrink Wrap Tape

Shrink wrap tape is primarily used for reinforcing shrink wrap seams or fusions, patching small holes in the shrink wrap, holding vents in place more securely, and attaching zipper-access doors when your project is nearly complete.

(we recommend at least 2" but 4" can help if holes happen)

  • Heat shrink tape - Also known as shrink film tape, it is used only on shrink wrap itself and should not touch the surface of a boat or other asset. This tape is a conformable, tough, and waterproof tape with a permanently tacky adhesive which bonds best to clean, dry surfaces through a wide range of temperatures.
  • UV Preservation tape - Also known as “Hull Tape,” this thicker tape, has a UV enhanced adhesive formula that allows it to withstand long term sunlight exposure. No film/residue leftover which can happen with other tape products. Used by many car auction businesses. Great to use on boats because this tape can touch the surface of boats without damaging or leaving residue. Recommended to have 1 roll of 2” tape and 1 roll of 4” tape for most projects.
  • Anti-chafe tape: A surface protection film that is used over the hull of boats or other areas where there is a concern for scratches. Sometimes used around the strap area, especially when transportation will be occurring. Designed to not leave residue while providing a UV protective surface between the shrink wrap and the covered object.
  • Reinforced shrink wrap tape - Used with reinforced shrink wrap. Not used for boats, primarily used for large industrial construction projects. This tape has been reinforced which adds increased tear resistance while not negatively affecting ease of installation.

Shrink wrap tape comes in three colors: white, blue, and clear. Typically tape color is the same as the shrink wrap color for uniformity and usage.

  • White - Most commonly used. Holds up in most climates well and offers minimal heat transference.
  • Clear - Primarily used to cover greenhouses. Also used for brokerage boats & liveaboards spending their winters ‘on the hard’. Clear shrink wrap is more likely to build up moisture under the cover and should be ventilated properly.
  • Blue - Ideal if your boat is being stored in an extreme northern climate. The blue color absorbs heat and allows snow and ice to slide off the boat. Not recommended for long-term storage or in spring-like conditions.

These top three accessories will certainly help make your shrink wrap projects easier and ensure better results. Find all things shrink wrap at Mr. Shrinkwrap.

What Thickness of Shrink Wrap is Best for Outdoor Storage?

By 5 months ago 424 Views No comments

Shrink wrap is an extremely versatile product that allows you to protect outdoor items such as boats, furniture, and other equipment. It also allows you to transport pallets, boxes, and a wide range of items effectively and efficiently. Offering protection from the elements and shipping/transporting of a wide range of products, shrink wrap is designed to provide solutions to everyday problems with a simple and easy installation process. Knowing what size to select for your in your marine or industrial needs is also important to ensure a successful wrapping project.

It can seem like a simple decision but it is important to know some basic facts about shrink wrap sizes before purchasing shrink wrap for your next project.

What is a MIL?

A mil is a unit of measurement used to determine thickness. 1mil is equal to .001 (1/1000) inch.

Mr. Shrinkwrap offers shrink wrap in the range of 2-12 mil and each has a very specific use. Check out our Mr. Shrinkwrap Advisor Tip on how to select the right size for your next project:

  • 6 Mil shrink wrap is our standard thickness for seasonal protection of outdoor furniture and other light-duty applications. Good for milder winters. It can be used to wrap boats, shed frames, pallets, and machinery that will be stored rather than transported.
  • 7 Mil shrink wrap is the most common thickness used and is typically found in marine applications like protecting boats and personal watercrafts (pwc). 7 Mil is also used for small to midsize scaffolding covers, crates, small equipment, and short-distance road travel. This shrink wrap is able to handle harsher winters with moderate snow.
  • 8 Mil shrink wraps are used for covering large boats, large scaffolding, medium-to-large size equipment, or if the object to be wrapped has considerably sharp edges. These thicker films are more puncture-resistant and can sustain higher levels of heat during the shrinking process. This wrap can be used for both storage and transportation.
  • 10 Mil shrink wrap is our first choice for wrapping heavy equipment for road transportation and is also well suited for industrial or construction/renovation applications such as temporary walls and dust barriers, and the protection of valuable equipment or rough materials for long-term storage.
  • 9 Mil and 12 Mil flame retardant shrink wrap is the thickest shrink wrap available and is ideal for building and scaffolding enclosure. 9Mil is for interior use and 12Mil is for exterior use. (More specifically this shrinkwrap is self- extinguishing).

Mr. Shrinkwrap Advisor Pro Tip: Different thicknesses of shrink wrap are more suitable for certain applications, but with proper preparation, any thickness of shrink wrap can be used for nearly any application. It is recommended to use thicker shrink wrap for long-distance road travel and heavy-duty applications.

Why you Should Rent a Shrinkfast 998 Heat Gun and NOT a Weed Burner for Your Next Shrink Wrap Job.

Why you Should Rent a Shrinkfast 998 Heat Gun and NOT a Weed Burner for Your Next Shrink Wrap Job.

First Things First...What is a Weed Burner/Roofing Torch?

A weed burner or roofing torch is a portable gas torch that produces a significant flame from the end of a long metal tube attached to a hose and regulator propane tank. The flame stays on all the time creating a constant hazard.

While the design is universal, some manufacturers include additional features such as an igniter, which is safer than lighting the flame tip with a lighter or match. Most of the time, the gas regulator is included, though its placement can vary.

The primary function of a weed burner is to use a flame to remove weeds in your yard, in or around sidewalks and driveways, and in gardens/farms. In the roofing industry, it is used to heat tar and roofing materials.
